Question
- With disability insurance providing your income, can you invest in an IRA account (i.e. does it count as earnings)? - Is there any way to invest in a 401k? Are you no longer eligible for your previous employer's 401k, or can you ever remain in that plan even if you are no longer working for that employer?

Answer
No it has to be income from a job. You can still remain in the plan. Or you can roll it over to an IRA.
